I would add if going to Sayville dont miss the Sayville chocolatier - awesome homade chocolates. Can grab some sweet treats for your walk down Foster Ave. and grab the Ferry to Sailors Haven - a gem on Fire Island.
I think Long Beach is the closest thing to this. The restaurants and shop are in the city not on the boardwalk although there is one hotel where you can stop & get a drink, albeit a very expensive one.
LI doesnt have this bc typically places that do, like AC, for example become run-down, loud & gritty. LI doesnt want this.
Long Beach boardwalk had a hotel on boardwalk, a whole food truck section by boardwalk and in west end a ton of bars and stores on street that runs beside boardwalk.
Stuff actually on boardwalk is more of a Jersey or Coney Island type thing
Yes and typically it brings more of a trashier crowd. I am glad LI doesnt have this. Keep the garbage in Jersey.
LIRR offers special package from the city to Long Beach that includes round trip ticket and access to the beach, I believe, check it out, I think they have similar package for Jones Beach, not sure about other popular beaches.
The boardwalk is certainly not the one you see on Coney Island with restaurants, in fact, when we moved, my son was shocked "Where do we eat?" as he was so used to the Brighton Beach/Sheepsheadbay canal walks that ended in us having dinner, but honestly, I prefer the clear separation of the boardwalk from the eateries now, keeps it a lot cleaner.

I don't know - this is a good business opportunity. LB is not very car friendly (parking is a nightmare by the boardwalk). It could be quite profitable to have some eateries within walking distance to the boardwalk.
Then again - this would likely never get approved by the NIMBY's
I would suggest Long Beach. Sayville is a nice little town if you have a few hours to kill. No beach, but close enough to the ferries to take you to the ocean beach.
