Had a discussion with a coworker and wondering does anyone have any idea, what it might cost (general ballpark) to remove an in ground pool on Long Island? I figured someone on CD might know the answer.

We got a quote that was almost as much as it costs to create one. 16x32 pool - $17k. This was a while back. We kept the pool.

I am sure they will give you a free estimate and if you do let us know how much for future reference , I am sure if you have a gunite or vinyl pool, bricks or no bricks around the pool would make a big difference in the price

I'd do it myself, seriously. There's almost always online ads (think Craigslist) offering free landfill and I'd break off the top portions with either a sledge hammer or appropriate (perhaps rented) power tool, throw it into the bottom of the thing and just bury it in dirt.

I'm sure it's not up to code and I'm sure there are experts who will tell me that's not the right way to do it but functionally it will get the job done and for minimal cost.

I had a friend that had this job done. It cost him 12k a couple years ago. The top 18" were knocked off and the bottom of the pool needs several large holes for drainage. If you don't open the bottom you will have a nice marsh in your back yard with plenty of mosquitoes.

Except for the fact that water that drains through the dirt would have no where to go and you'd have swamp in the backyard.

If you broke a few holes through the bottom (maybe with a rented jackhammer) you'd be golden though!

I couldn't imagine a vinyl pool costing that much to do.

We were house hunting once and one house we saw had great space in the backyard for a pool. It was a FSBO and the owner told us he had plans for one but never followed through. Luckily I did a search on google earth and saw that the property actually HAD a pool in the backyard once. Mmm, wonder why he didn't want to tell us that?
