The lesson I learned today is to never let your guard down, anywhere, even in places you feel safe. Today in Bellmore I had my camera stolen from my jacket pocket when I got up from my table to get my food for no more than 30 seconds. It happened so fast, and when I touched my jacket a minute later it felt lighter than it should've and I realized it was missing. They had cameras all over this place and caught the guy on camera. He fled on foot and the police could not locate him, so it's probably gone for good.
Now I'm usually pretty paranoid (as y'all know ) but just this once I didn't take my jacket with me for the 30 seconds it takes to walk over and get my food. That was one expensive mistake. Fortunately it wasn't a $400 I-phone which I dont have and dont ever plan on getting just for this very reason.
Here I am worry about bad stuff happening in Westbury & Hicksville, and it snuck up on me in Bellmore. Unfortunately there really is nowhere left on Long Island you can feel comfortable, you have to keep your guard up at all times, lock your doors, windows, and never let any of your stuff out of sight, not even for 20 seconds. The workers there said the man on video wasn't a regular customer, heck, he never even purchased anything. Not sure if he lived in the area or not, but I do know Bellmore is only 2 stops or 5 minutes away from Freeport on the train, I'm sure the thug probably made a hasty getaway onto one.
But anyway, be careful, I dont want to see this happen to anyone else. Don't think you can't be a victim because you feel safe, because thats just what the thugs are counting on. Heck they probably know Bellmore is laid back so thats where they hit. No more dissin' Westbury for awhile though. I guess thats what I get for years of it here.
I've done all I can for now, NCPD has a report filed on the incident and the video of the perp, his face is very visible. Maybe I'll call some pawn shops tomorrow, I do have the serial # so maybe it will turn up there as most perps usually steal stuff to sell for their drug habits. Wish me luck.

I bet they they have done that many times at gyms. Unlike JiW,s camera, car tgeft is serious and not likely done by someone who just saw an opportunity to steal something.

I never leave my handbag behind no matter where I am for just that reason. If you had it in your jacket pocket, no doubt, you were being watched. Perhaps he saw you take a picture and put it back in your jacket.

I am amazed by the numbers of women that will do just what you did in a restaurant and they go to a salad bar or rest room and leave their handbag.

JohnInWestbury,

Sorry your camera got stolen. I guess you learned a hard lesson

I never, ever leave my items unattended not even for a second. I know things can and do happen. There was a series of thefts at LI supermarkets a couple of years ago. The woman would turn around to get something off a shelf and while she was looking for what she wanted, some guy or woman would come by and steal the wallet out of the purse that was left in the shopping cart. They were very quick about it. I don't know if they ever caught the people.

I think I might have an old digital camera if you want it. It's not very good (less than 10MP; I think 7MP) but if I still have it and you want it, please DM me and I can mail it to you.

Glad I read this. It could have been posted in any city anywhere.. even my old town, but I get complacent... This time of year always seems to see a rise in thefts. ..and yes, I need to be more careful in supermarkets/stores.. definitely.

Most of these kinds of thieves are not very bright.

Next they'll probably post something on Utube bragging of their exploits.
