Moderator cut: language My total heating costs are under $1K for the whole year. People are answering this like it's normal. I have a small house with one zone.

I recommend the balanced billing plan similar to the one PSEG/LIPA offers
Curious why balanced billing is better unless you need to pinch pennies and don't want unexpected highs. By seeing actual cost every month, you can tell if there's a problem. With balanced billing, you wouldn't know unless there's a significant overage at the end of the year, and then you have to track it down and argue against it somehow.
As for the OP, I saw the option to opt-in to that new meter many months back and quickly decided not to because of potential problems like this. I report the meter every month and know exactly what to expect. I'm holding out as long as possible.
This insanity has to be an error due to the new equipment. I smell no gas and don't even have a gas stove. The heater went on only to heat water for the dishwasher and the shower. I requested a visit from the company that I have a service plan with to confirm my equipment is working okay. Haven't had any problems at all before this. If there's a leak, they messed up something outside doing the changeover, nothing changed inside.
Slomin's (the company that I have a service plan with) said "you probably have a leak underground." National Grid's issue, right?
