To give you the more suburban feel in your price range, Lindenhurst and Babylon/West Babylon might be possibilities. Both Babylon and Lindenhurst have nice downtowns (Babylon is fabulous but supply in your price range is limited).

Deer Park has homes in your price range and it's not too far from Babylon Village for the "downtown experience", yet access to highways.

In addition to price, you'll need to consider RE taxes as well - have you given any thought to the max you can afford? Maybe talking to a loan officer will give you a better idea of what you can afford re combination of price/taxes.
Yes, my thoughts exactly. This area has everything OP wants

For the record I didn't say Northport. Listen if OP is talking about Ronkonkoma I said these places were closer. I would pick a small SFH in Deer ParkBabylon/Lindenhurst/etc over a condo in Sachem. Nothing wrong with Sachem AT ALL except you have maintenance fees for condos and then you are dealing with another 10 exits on the LIE at rush hour which sucks.

Although the worst part of the traffic to drive to Brooklyn is in Brooklyn...

How about Inwood? It's close to Brooklyn and it's the cheapest town in the 5 Towns, but I think it's safe enough to raise a family. Does anyone here know much about it?

House has been on the market since June, with several price reductions.
As per the listing, there is Sandy damage in the basement.
