How corrupt is Nassau County Civil Service?

Karl Kampe & protegy -

how is it that miraculously - irregardless of qualifications - politicos manage to get the very candidate they promised the job that they promised -

off a civil service list that is "graded" on "experience" and "education"

each and every time ?

For CS I think the real corruption begins when you actually get your foot in the door.
Appointed jobs (no test, just hire) are corrupt before you get the job and beyond.

The real question is how corrupt is suffolk civil service lol

Here is one, suffolk county assistant school security director.
The job starts at 85k bucks with minimal qualifications.
There is roughly 50 people on the list who passed the civil service exam.
Copaigue school district goes ahead and hires there token poltically connected crony who was the lowest scorer on the test with a whopping score of a 70. He bypassed 50 people with higher scores, some even scored 95 and 100. So this character andrews from human resources sends out these canvass letters like the process is laughably legitamate and winds up hiring the absolute lowest scoring person on the exam. Numerous people on the list had many years of law enforcement and some had 30 years experience in school security in suffolk county. So copaigue put there chosen one in regardless of any civil service list or order or fairness that people on the list expects to exist. The very reason why they took a civil service test is to avoid these corrupt hiring practices.
Thank you civil service for letting copaigue human resources get away with this underhanded scam and copaigue schools for wasting everyones time and money. Im sure theres some little clause somewhere in fine print that basically allows this type of stuff to go on. Theres no point in studying for these test when all that matters is who you know and you can be hired with the lowest score possible.

Nassau or suffolk civil service always have and will bend the rules to hire there friends ,neighbors, relatives etc before anything else.
So when you pay 35 to 100 bucks to civil service to take an exam you can rest assured you will make making a kind charitable donation to the county. If you do pass you can be confident human resources will do nothing with your application other than trash it to get to there buddy at the end of the list just like copaigue schools has done and continues to do. These people in hr are plants and fixtures for 20 to 30 years turning a blind eye to these unethical hiring practices.
Copaigue also ask right on the application who do you know in the school district. I guess its just to expedite which pile to place your application in. Of course they throw in the clAuse that there an equal opportunuty employer blah blah blah minus the part where some people are more equal than others

How does one become a crony? There's nothing to be done if you're not a relative or neighbor, but I assume crony status can be obtained by going to party meetings, making donations, becoming known to people, getting onto event lists, etc. What else?

I think a big reason for this problem is the attitude in Nassau and Suffolk governments that taxpayers cough up billions, and this cash is booty to be distributed to the connected. It's part of the NY Empire State culture where everybody wants to feel like a big shot, and the ability to force other people to pay for friends' benefits makes them feel even more powerful.

Things are so different in N. Dakota, a state reaping billions in energy dollars over the past few years. Previously a poor, thinly populated state, they traditionally have prudent and conservative money views. The state is now considered one of the best run in spite of the energy wealth bounty.

I recently had an experience working in Seaford School District.
Was hired off the list and worked there for six months.
Five-and-a-half-months into my probationary period I was told that my probation would
be extended because of mandated holidays I took because the school was closed during the holidays (i.e. Thanksgiving).
A week later, I was told that I was being terminated as Account Clerk and there was not a single reason,
written or oral, as to why I was being terminated.
I had attained a 95 on the account clerk civil service test, have a B.S. in Accounting and I am also a Paralegal.
I was never absent one day until after she told me I would be terminated---and never given any prior written or oral specific reasons.
Now I am wondering if there was somebody else on the list, a friend or relative, who wanted this job and therefore I needed to be pushed out.

The CS test and job ads are a dog and pony show; they usually already have someone picked out and "go through the system" to keep it on the up and up.

Tech companies do the same thing with H1B visa employees - they place job ads on Monster dot com but they have no intention of hiring an American when they can bring over an Asian for half the price and no benefits.

You are absolutely correct. I worked for a large international company and when a vacancy had to be filed, an internal and external posting for the position was made. The person to fill that position was already picked and spoken to and they knew they were getting the job. However, because the company did not want to get sued they had to go through the motions of posting the position and interview supposed individuals for the position. As I was one of the persons that would interview the candidates I interviewed a number of candidates that surpassed the qualifications of the already selected individual, but had no input as the selection and decision had already been made.

This happens all the time. A friend, a family member or a favor is needed and guess what, your qualifications mean nothing because they need to put that person in.

Detailed information such as this needs to be made public in every case. Shaming them is a good way to keep it from continuing to happen because they may think nobody knows.

Default Very

You might get the job, ultimately you will be let go without cause (because that is how system works)
and then some relative will be hired.

Beware.
