If they pierce the tax cap, don't they need it to go to a public vote? If that's the case, cram it right back down their throats.
No, the school district budget votes are up for a public vote. In order for the 2% cap to break, it needs to pass with 60% of the vote. However, town budgets aren't. More votes are needed in the town board to break the 2% cap than is needed to pass a budget that stays within the 2% cap, but in this case (as with pretty much every TOB budget) it was an unanimous vote from the tea partying tax revolters.

the bottom line is that schools on LI need to learn ho to operate WITHIN their existing budget. the private sector has been doing it for YEARS! They need to stop holding the kids hostage every time they don't get their way - blackmailing to cut after school programs and then they have the audacity to say IT'S FOR THE KIDS?
"John Capobianco, spokesman for the Town of Oyster Bay Democratic Committee, said the tax hike passed by the all-Republican board was "unbelievable . . . It is not fair to the taxpayers and the residents," and there was "no notice, no information, no access to the budget," he said."
This is ridiculous on top of this the county wants a 3% tax increase so in total Oyster Bay Town Residents will be paying 12% more in taxes just we need, make it more difficult for people to live here.
The Town of Oyster Bay just passed an 8.8% increase in taxes for 2015. The tax increase was unannoucned, with no hearing or anything like that and this was done after a public hearing on the budget that had no tax increase planned...
