My husband Matt and myself are looking to move out of our Nassau apartment and to move to Suffolk. Unfortunately our range for our family with a child and budget leaves us in the 200s range, even the 180s. I've seen posts before about Suffolk having bad areas and drugs and am curious on any towns or areas perhaps Selden, Farmingville, Patchogue, Middle Island (probably not right??)) have areas that may be okay to raise a child.
We cannot afford Nassau at ALL.
My question being this; we found while driving a lot of old looking cards. I would think that illegals are living in the area and while not bad by any means for us being white middle class and having leased cars I am wondering if we will be targeted or bothered. Does anyone have issues in these type of areas where the houses are within that lower range?
Sounds racist and I understand that people will have differing opinions. Lets discuss.

It's not just illegals who drive old looking cars. Suffolk just tends to be more laid back and have less of that snobby image-conscious appeal; so there's less pressure to rush off to Habberstad BMW and get a new car just b/c the Russo family down the block got a new Lexus.
However, it is a red flag if you see cars parked on the lawn...or 4+ cars in a driveway.
I would say your worrying too much. And nobody would target you for being white, Suffolk is actually way whiter than Nassau according to stats. And there are TONS of low-cost areas in deep Suffolk that are predominately white so you wouldn't stand out at all.

We don't have fancy cars nor want any by any means. I think we just have to drive around at five pm and see the type of people.
Towns we are looking into and could be open to after our two month weekend drives throughout sale listings. We are ready to buy and our lease is up in a month.

^^^ What I noticed was that;
- Old souped-up cars and old foriegn suv's are signs of the barrios
- Old luxury cars are signs of the ghetto
- Old camaros, old American SUV's and of course pickup trucks are signs of hillbilly type areas
