Semi-related to this, the areas north of Setauket village, such as Old Field, Cranes Neck and Strongs Neck were not originally zip code 11733 as the are now.

I'm not able to remember what the zip code for these areas was (due to brain rot I think).

Very odd.

We looked at a house in PJS but 3V SD. Agent told us that post offices were temporarily assigned during certain periods to handle the extra volume, and some areas were never returned to their originally intended zip. Idk if there's any truth to that, but that's what I was told.

Very doubtful. The postal service assigns additional carriers during periods of heavy volume. They wouldn't move neighborhoods from one zip to another to accommodate volume and then swap them back as there's much more involved. Sounds like that particular RE agent was in say anything mode.

The original zip code for Wantagh was 11794 and the North Wantagh substation became 11793, I believe at a later date. A number of years later it was all combined into one that continued to use the 11793 code and 11794 disappeared only to show up in Stony Brook much later.

I don't remember this & I lived on the Neck from the early fifties until the nineties . Not saying that it's impossible , just that I do not recall us having a different zip . We had our own pretty little white post office by the pond , though . I sure do miss the old Setauket .

I remember using 11794 for SBU in 1982. I'm guessing the shift was late 1960s or early 1970s?
