I never see my garbage men but when I did I gave them $20 Mail Lady $10. $60 to tip garbage men seems like a lot me but maybe I am frugal. I have never gotten a Thank you card or Christmas card from them but always get a thank you card from the mail lady.

When you leave an obscene amount of large parts and ton of litter for them to clean up. You wait outside and normally they aren't able to service that amount of trash at once (its a courtesy thing to other neighbors' service that you not do that) you tip them to take it and apologize for the amount of stuff you left out for them.

I leave for work at 5:15am so I tape envelope on inside of lid. Not too wise to do this night before because you run the chance of it getting pinched by thieves.

Taking extraordinary circumstances out of the equation (large appliances, tree trunks, heavy items), I really can't comprehend why I would need to tip garbage men for doing their jobs.

They get paid fairly well for the type of work they are doing, belong to a union, and I already pay for their salary from my taxes.

I don't get tips from the people I provide a service for. Not sure why people tip them, nor do I understand why they would 'expect' to get any.

Again, if I am filling the curb with heavy items, to me this is an extraordinary instance that goes beyond a typical garbage pickup, and at THAT point I would tip them.

But not for merely doing their job.

Mine actually have a set of balls on them. They actually leave Christmas cards in the mail box asking for tips. I tip them anyway but I think the way they do it is like a shakedown!

Too funny coming from one who's buddies make phonecalls trying to "shakedown" little old ladies for the retired police fund.

None of my buddies do anything like that. I also get calls from those Police organizations. They are not endorsed by the PBA or the police department. In fact when I get there calls I ask them to send me info and they hang up on me lol.

I used to get them and asked as you did and then I said to myself the next time I get a call I am going to "play" with them. I ask stupid questions, for example, " Will I get a sticker I can put on my door so you know I gave money?" or "Do you let my local dept know?" I would say I want to donate $50 or $100 and then make some crap up that if my hubby found out he would be mad and probably beat me up again, like the last time. They eventually hang up but if I wasn't busy, I liked to play with them like a cat plays with a mouse. I figure two can play at that game.
