Holiday tipping for your paper carrier is more than appreciated.

The carriers get paid between .08 and .11 per paper. The carriers are required to work 7 days a week regardless of the weather, hurricanes, snowfalls, blizzards.

They work 365 days a year. They are also required to pay their own gas, use their own cars, insurance expenses repairs ect.

Also, they are 1099, so they are required to pay federal and state taxes. Just in case you did not know, now you do.

No one forces them to be newspaper carriers. Tipping them would be the last people I would ever tip, regardless of your lesson.

how many papers do they deliver in a day typically? It doesn't sound like a lot but I want to do the math and see how poor these people are for what they do.

The only thing I feel bad about is they have to be out there before dawn.

Have you thought about talking to your boss about a raise? I get so tired about reading how all these "jobs" are tip only.

If no one jumps to these jobs they wouldn't be "tip only".

These used to be jobs done by kids. What's changed?

Numerous factors eliminated the "little merchant" distribution system. Among them were:
1) The baby boom era ended in the early 90`s which significantly reduced the available labor force.
2) The youth carrier system is expensive. In the late 80`s, Newsday's circulation department had approximately 400 full time employees. The number now is probably somewhere around thirty.
3) Youth carriers have to have working papers which prohibit them from working before 6am. Delivery deadlines are now 5:30
4) Home delivery penetration is somewhere between 10 and 20 percent. Back in the day, it approached 70 to 75 percent. Simply put, geographically, routes would be too large for a teenager to deliver.
5) Even if permitted by law, how many parents would allow their kids out in the dark unescorted?

The bigger question is, who on earth would CHOOSE to work this job when an equally paying job can be found anywhere? Go work at Starbucks.

Since you mentioned the 1099, are you in the habit of reporting all the tip income to the IRS?
