Most areas around the country, even including upstate NY, don't have a strong business base. Yet the taxes almost everywhere are lower than here. LI is dense population-wise and there's lots of various types of industry in the mix.
It's true that retail doesn't provide good paying jobs, but stores pay a lot in property taxes. Nobody can argue we don't have much in the way of stores here.
