I can't imagine taking care of a 22 month old and having that type of daily commute. If your wife does learn to drive, you will end up having to buy a second car. Keep that in mind for your budget. I'd rather do the extreme far commute from NJ via NJ transit than from Coram. Sounds like maybe you are trying to live closer to your mother-in-law.

I can't speak as to the reliability of these routes, but at least they're there as a backup, assuming your wife doesn't have to be at work particularly early. (Realistically, she's not going to get to Penn Station much earlier than 8AM).

Also keep in mind that these routes serve other sections of Coram besides Coram Plaza, but I just used it s a reference point. You can look at the maps for the specific streets traveled.

* The 6A bus has runs departing Coram Plaza (Middle Country Road & Mount Sinai Road) at 5:50AM, 6:20AM, 6:45AM, and 7:55AM), traveling arriving at the Ronkonkoma LIRR station 25 minutes later.

Return trips to Coram Plaza depart Ronkonkoma at 5:50PM & 7PM.

There are trips that run up to George Link Circle, but unfortunately, those are during the middle of the day, not during rush hour (for some strange reason).

* The S61 has trips departing Coram Plaza at 5:40AM, 6:10AM, 7:10AM, and 7:40AM, arriving at Port Jefferson 15 minutes later.

* In the afternoon rush hour, service runs every 30 minutes, with the last bus departing Port Jefferson at 7:35PM.

There's also service to Medford & Patchogue in the other direction as well.

* The S60 has trips departing Coram Plaza at 6:15AM, 6:45AM, and 7:45AM, arriving in Port Jefferson 20 minutes later, and arriving in Stony Brook (which also has a 7Bus stop) 30-40 minutes later.

In the evening, the last buses running out to Coram are at 6:15PM & 7:15PM from Port Jefferson.
Thanks great info. As far as moving to NJ that isn't really an option. The only place my wife would like out there is jersey city area and that cost about 3000 per month just to rent a 1 bedroom apt. Sure she could get home in 20 mins but I don't plan on working in Jersey forever.

The plan was always for her to get her permit and start driving again. A second car wouldn't be a problem. Getting her to over come her fear of driving is the problem lol the plan is to have my mother inlaw live with us.

Are you sure you wouldn't want an average sized commute for a reasonable commute?

I commute from queens ny to jersey 5 days a week. As I said in an earlier post jersey isn't really an option. I've lived there before and the only places my wife would be willing to live in jersey is really expensive. I'll move to Nassau before I buy a home in NJ. I don't plan to work in jersey forever.

I moved from the Bronx which a 1 hour commute to Midtown then to Astoria Queens which was 30 minutes door to door. We decided to buy a house a friend talked us into to move to Smithtown, nice area, get more of a house for your money. We lasted 4 years commuting, if you do not have 2 cars you are screwed there is no public transportation to speak of the nearest store was 1-1/2 miles away, it took 2 hours 15 minutes on a perfect day to go door to door to work on a bad day it was over 3 hours. We had a great baby sitter but you get tired of picking a up a sleeping child off someone's couch at 8:00 pm and have to do the same thing all over the next day. We moved back went to Yonkers bought a house not as nice but 1 hour 10 minute commute and walk to the supermarket 5 blocks away and the bus closer than that. Just something to think about.

Forgive me for asking, but why do you prefer Nassau to NJ? I don't think you're wrong in your opinion, I'm just curious.

Biggest reason is the people. I've had some really bad experiences out there. I love jersey city and a few other places but you get more for your money in NY. Plus NY transportation is better. If I'm hanging out in the city late at night and had to get home by train lIRR is better than jersey transit. And most places in LI is cleaner than NJ

If you do this you will be looking to unload the house within 2 years. That will be a killer commute for both of you and then throw in your child that you will never get to see. And at 22 months my guess is you are thinking about baby #2 already.

In 3 short years your child will be in kindergarten. It goes by faster than you think. And then next thing you know you will be dealing with homework, extracurriculars, playdates and you'll be wondering why the hell you bought this house (if you didn't already). Kids do not get easier as they get older. And if they get sick at school, the school doesn't want to hear "I'll be there in 2 hours" and if they end up chronically ill then you've got an even bigger problem. My sister had a year where my nephew was constantly sick and spent 3 months leaving work early because the school sent him home and visiting all kinds of specialists.

Your plan only works if everything goes perfectly every single day and I guarantee that's not going to happen.
