I was dead set on converting to NG when I closed on my new house in August (Nassau County), but then oil prices fell off a cliff, so priorities changed for the time being.

Are there are whisperings that process for tank abandonment will change in near future? I'm still under the impression you can foam or sand and existing tank and leave it in the ground, receive a certificate and be done with it. Is this correct?

That was the process 20 years ago when we bought in Nassau County and a friend of ours son just purchased a home and he had the sellers abandon the tank and fill with sand this past October also in Nassau.

This is probably the best time to get it done, as you may get a better rate on the work. I converted in 2008 when oil was about the same as now, and the work was completed in June, the low season. The conversion has paid for itself at least once, and gas is still cheaper than oil. It adds to the value of your house, it's better for the environment and the system doesn't have a bad odor. Oil will rise in price once the Saudis have finished off the US competition. Theirs is a long term strategy.

As far as I know, abandonment hasn't changed. They pumped out the old oil and filled the tank. No problems with that.

Oil may fall as low as 30 bucks a barrel.

How is gas better for environment. A lot of it is fracked etc. Just like oil.

Yes, there is still no law governing tank abandonment which is as simple as you describe. They are always threatening to pass such a law but haven't yet.
