New York State had established presence on Fire Island back in 1892 when a cholera scare prompted the Governor Roswell P. Flower to hastily purchase the Surf Hotel to quarantine immigrants exposed to the disease on transatlantic ships of September that year. This action caused a panic as commercial orders of fish harvested from the Great South Bay were cancelled. In addition, nearby residents began to worry about their own health and wellbeing.
The Governor called out the military to put down resistance by the locals to landing boat loads of sick and dying immigrants. No word about the deaths of the immigrants or where they were buried on Fire Island.
The hotel was cursed and literally washed out to sea.
What has happened since then? It is not in google. Did they find out why the mansion burned down and why it burned down? I want to know because it was very historicil and very very famous. If it burned down the ground is still haunted or is it over? Do people still go there and what is left?
