Why is it that the Mastic/Mastic Beach/Shirley area is always bashed on here? I have made many recent visits to Mastic at night, and not once have I been the victim of a crime. Yes there are some seedy-looking people walking around, but I'm planning on spending a night walking around the streets of it over the summer and see how bad it really is. But from what I have seen so far, this area doesn't deserve the reputation it gets on here. How much different is this area really than say Coram, Selden, Centereach, or Middle Island? Not very.
Why not read through the other 3-4 threads about this exact area on the first page of this forum? The Mastic-Shirley area has been debated for years on this site, with some very strong opinions on both sides of the issue.
If you like the area, then it is for you. If you don't, stay away. It gets a bad reputation because of the years of degredation and despair that have been eminent there. Unfortunately, one poster saying the area isn't as bad as others make it sound, is not going to change the area.

May I suggest you visit the police precinct instead of wandering around at night. They will give you the answers you are seeing.
FWIW I know NOTHING about the area but I would trust the police for that type of info,

Maybe you're the seediest looking person wandering around at night so nobody wants to mug you? (J/K)

I posted this on another old thread didn't get a reply so I thought I'd try here
Any feedback on Wavecreast Dr. in Mastic Beach? Looking at a smaller home on Lons creek at the eastern end of the road. I agree the houses range widely there are abandon small shacks one burned condemned and 3 houses down a new ones going up that looks like $500,000. Any crime on this peninsula ?
OP is correct, Mastic is kind of trashy and is far from the nicest place on the Island but it's not dangerous or a slum like people say it is.
