So the time has come where we would like to get a new refrigerator. The one that came in our house continues to have problems with the ice maker/water dispenser. We have been wanting a bigger fridge since we moved into our home so we figure we should just move this one into the garage just for storage of leftovers/beer/soda, etc.
Anyway, I see there's some places on Long Island that sell fairly new, refurbished appliances. Is that a bad idea? My wife always says I end up paying more by trying to save a buck and I am not sure if it will apply here.
Any thoughts?
Also, if anybody has had a decent experience buying used/refurb'd with some kind of warranty from a local warehouse, please let me know where.
When I was single and not making much money I bought refurbished washer and dryer and that set lasted me almost 10 years with one repair. When I moved a ground wire got loosened and honestly the only reason we got rid of that set is because we were moving again and did not want to move them so we sold them.
As long as you get the items from a reputable shop you should be fine.
Here's a piece of good advice you're gonna hate. You'd be better off buying a new machine without bells and whistles like the ice maker and water dispenser. This saves you hundreds, and there's going to be less problems with it because of fewer moving parts, no plumbing issues and a simpler design.
People like the fancy fridges with lots of features, and so do I, but the laws of physics apply to home appliances and cars, too. You'll also have a warranty for 1 year at least buying a new fridge.
Another option would be to go someplace where they sell "scratch and dent" appliances.
You'll get a brand new item with full warranty, etc. and the imperfection is often so minor it's hard to tell what it is - but they can't sell it for full price/new.
I should also mention that I bought a refurbished Westinghouse wide screen TV and it developed a fatal breakdown 3 months after purchase. I was out $400. Your cc company won't cover used or refurbished merchandise in their warranty.

AmEx actually does cover refurbished electronics provided it is refurbished/recertified by the original manufacturer.
I personally got turned off by the operation ... but some people like them
