The problem with Long Island IMO is the suburban sprawl and overdevelopment caused by the numerous school districts and greedy public sector unions. Every school district is starved for revenue due to the need to pay exorbitant public sector salaries, so they do everything they can to attract business revenue into their district. Districts compete in a race to the bottom. The needs of residents are secondary. Liveability suffers. Just look at what happened to the 347 corridor over the past 25 years. What a monstrosity. The school districts just care about money, not the residents. Look at all the businesses that have been allowed to pollute, create toxic plumes, and destroy the water table.
Compared to Long Island those are small areas and easy to pick. The Island spans a lot of geography and life-styles. Melville is a lot different than Sag Harbor.

Well I just read the WTAE.com local headline page. Multiple arrests from bar fight, trooper shot, biker impaled, bank robbed, someone stealing UPS packages, bail granted for college student shooting ....and Best fish fry Fridays.
Pittsburgh- sounds like a charming place to raise pitbulls.

It's obvious you have a big chip on your shoulder; LI ain't as bad as you're making it out to be. What's ironic is your last sentence - Pittsburgh used to be (and still most likely is) the most hazardous city to live in, in the world!! The history there is not pretty. You picked the worst area to live in if you're worried about pollution. I hope you don't plan on having kids or have any health issues.
