Levitts are notorious for poor insulation and drafts. I had to keep it in the 70s to even keep from cold hands. 67 is all I need now here.

I don't ever heat my basement. But of course, more sqft needing heat, the more oil used. Your burner is merely keeping up with your thermostat's request to keep the temperature. It depends what is calling for heat and how open the area is. Maybe you only need 1 floor at a time. There are zones for that reason.

Is that true about the Levitts? So, we'd have to take down Sheetrock and redo all insulation?

FYI - my furnace was a 2 zone Weil-McLain WGO 4 (i.e. a "Gold" model) with a Beckett burner. Pretty standard for LI, and around 15 years old. Separate Bock HW tank.

Heating a bigger area will take more oil, but again, it's heat loss that you have to worry about more. You could go through 24 gallons a day if you all you heated was a 10x12 room if the window was open because the furnace would never shut down. If the house is leaky then the heat can escape all over the place similar to having an open window.

Before making any decisions you should probably find out where the heat loss is occurring. Could be from the ceiling, recessed lights, fireplace flue, around outlets, etc.

ok. Hubby just informed me its a 5 zone, Weil McClain, 12-13 years with Sep hot water heater. He said there are 2 doggie doors as well. He said a new high efficiency furnace and window replacement/insulating better could cut it by 25%. Sound possible?

What's the efficiency on the current one? If it's less than 70% then I'd believe it would help, but a WM (even not Gold) should still be in the 75-80% range. A WGO4 is around 85%. It's possible also that the nozzle is oversized which burns more oil than needed. It's also possible that the furnace needs a good servicing...

I think the windows/insulation route would pay more dividends.

This home is approx 4300 sq ft. My sister's home is very poorly insulated, she keeps it at 68-70 all day/night, has 1,859 sq ft, an unfinished basement, and 2 canter levered sections that aren't insulated underneath. She averaged 230-250 gal/mo during Jan/Feb. So I guess the gallons used on this possible purchase could be accurate, even if insulated well? It's a Levitt, no basement.
I must be missing something. I thought you said your sister was in the Levitt, but then you mentioned she has a basement. Are you considering a 4300sqft built-up Levitt with no basement?

Yeah, at 4300 square feet the fact that it started as a Levitt almost doesn't count. Somewhere along the line it gained about 3500 square feet and nobody know what kind of materials and workmanship went into what are probably multiple additions.

I have three sisters. Yes, considering an extended Levitt. No basement.

Its a stony brook Levitt, not Levittown. The original sq footage on this model was about 2300-2500 sq ft. Then if you convert attic space in the original house, you get more sq ft. Plus it has a huge addition.
