Hate to tell you this but when you compare outcomes like graduation rate with the amount spent per student LI schools aren't anywhere as good as their purported reputation. Smart kids will thrive just about anywhere and good schools aren't limited to just LI.

There are plenty of affordable housing options and if you live frugally you can retire young when your kids finish school and gtfo of here to go where you really want to live but there are no job opportunities.

Depending on the career path there are PLENTY of job opportunities outside of LI. Another misnomer that good paying jobs only exist on LI or NYC. Of course if one is a teacher or police officer the pay is a lot lower elsewhere.

How about blue collar skilled trade jobs? How do they compare outside of NYC metro?

There are awesome, high-paying jobs in every major market. I almost moved to Austin and Las Vegas because of job opportunities that paid just slightly less but cost of living was 1/3. The only reason we stayed was because we wanted to be near our extended families.

If you mean union jobs then that depends on the locals and amount of union participation. I'm not particularly knowledgeable there.
