The public school year is 180 instructional days regardless of where you live.
We start the last week of August in NC - used to be earlier but the tourism board fought it and finally won. We will go back the 24th this summer.
We don't get the Jewish holidays, Columbus Day, or a week in February. We also seem to get less time off at spring break although we seem to get a longer Christmas break. My kids have been done since June 4/5, although the last "official day" was June 8 (mine all "graduated" and at our schools traditionally get the last day off when they are promoting out of the school - this is not the case with most of the schools here though).
Public HS graduation here starts the first weekend in June and continues through that following week.
One of my kids is going to Catholic HS in the fall, he starts August 12th, I think.
I have heard of some northeastern schools starting before Labor Day in case of snow days.
