Mexico has been leading a violent crackdown on cartels since Calderon became president, now continued under Nieto. People there consider it to be Medellin II. But many Mexicans are correct to point out that the root cause of the narcotics problem are not suppliers in Mexico. It's demand in the U.S. For as long as there are Americans who want to buy drugs, there will always be enterprises willing to supply the demand.

So it's our fault? How about they clean up their own house, first? Maybe they need a stronger northern border?

What has become of Supply & Demand? Sinaloa is currently has plenty of supply but is trying to create demand on LI.

I pulled a more recent article (May 2015)
Rise of Drug Cartel Brings Wave of Mexican Violence - WSJ

Quote:
The flare-up of violence in Guadalajara, a city of 1.5 million people in a metropolitan area of 4.5 million, and the resort town of Puerto Vallarta is the latest setback for the government of President Enrique Peña Nieto. The government has been determined to show that Mexico is a modern, emerging economy, but its inability to control areas where criminal gangs continue to exert control have frustrated these efforts.

“Guadalajara is not a little town in the middle of nowhere, and this shows the cartel has the logistics and power to paralyze a city,”
Then there's the issue of Police corruption to go hand in hand with the above:

Since taking up office in 2012, Peña Nieto has sought to play down the drug violence that has ravaged Mexico in recent years and divert attention to the raft of reforms his government has passed in the energy, telecommunications and education sectors.

The President’s plans would allow the federal government to replace local administrations if investigators find that they have been colluding with organised crime. But by focusing only on corruption at local level, critics contend, Peña Nieto ignores infiltration of state and even federal authorities by criminal gangs.
How Mexico's President Plans To Fix Police Corruption
Quote:
Much of the Mexican law enforcement apparatus has long been considered corrupt, but protests have been reignited in recent months after the disappearance of 43 students, allegedly kidnapped by local police officials.
There's only so much our law enforcement can do proactively, and only so much information about the dangers of meth that can be given to people in an effort to prevent them from using.

I grew up within a law enforcement household and with extended family of police and attorneys. Hearing stories of young kids OD'ing back in the 70's left quite the impression on me as a young kid, as did learning about the Rockefeller Drug Laws. Seeing friends OD as a young adult only served to reinforce the lessons learned earlier.

Why are these Americans staying clean without nudging from law enforcement? As I wrote earlier, they are getting information about the dangers of drugs, or in this case, meth from sources such as the news media, and dare I write, Breaking Bad? Then again, there are a fair number of those who are drug-free yet use or abuse alcohol. I guess everyone picks their own poison.
