after browsing the forum i've come across the following:

Lido
Giglo
Smith Point
Robert Moses
Cupsogue

the only beach i've ever been to on LI was Jones and i thought it was absolutely awful. not the beach so much as the people that seem to frequent it. i will do whatever it takes to avoid that and would love some direction.

thanks!

My favorite pristine beach is in Southampton the parts you need the 4wd permit to get to.

There are actually pristine beaches usually resident only private beaches.

Atlantic Beach Estates has the nicest beach, just find someone to invite you.

If you do beach just 2-3 times a year go east.
Nice beaches. Start from Smith point all the way upto Hither Hills.... crowd decreases exponentially.
Find your sweet spot.

Avoid Robert Moses Field 5 all the way down to the left. You will find some nudies with non-pristine bodies!

thanks all. i guess i am specifically more about this weekend. saturday, myself and some friends are taking a trip. i grew up at the jersey shore (the nice part, Spring Lake area) but i have had a tough time finding anything that comes close.

i've only ever been to Jones but i also don't want to drive 2-3 hours to go to the tip of the island.

the nice LI beaches that dont have the bridge and tunnel crowd packing them are generally in Suffolk.

The closer public ones like Jones Beach are very nice but the crowds ruin it.

Why not just go to the Rockaways. The parts closer to Nassau county line are free and less crowded.

Many parts of Robert Moses are empty, even on the peak days.

In the areas in between the fields..it was awesome.

Avoid Jones Beach, that's where all the millions of city people flood

If you are looking to experience peace and something truly unique, Sailors Haven and Sunken Forest are TOTALLY worth the trip. The ferry departs from Sayville.

The Beaches in Easthampton Township are the best, but you can't park there on weekends, and you have to mortgage your house to park there on weekdays.

I heard some mention of a bus from a parking lot or something going there, but with kids I want to be near my car.

nobody calls them the "bridge and tunnel crowd" when they're on their side of the bridges and tunnels.
