A guy I work with told me the other day that pretty much all bays near South Massapequa are smelly during the summer period. Anyone out there having experienced bad smells during a certain period of time in those bays or is it just bad rumours ? Or is this something that may be isolated to specific areas ?

Also, how dangerous would you reckon it is to raise children in a waterfront property ?

As I'm looking at buying a waterfront property, any comment is greatly appreciated.

The harbors and coves on the north shore can get a little smelly from time to time, too. It's a normal thing -- think of it -- the water is filled with all manner of life, during certain tidal phases and really warm days, one is bound to smell a funky smell.

I'd be more concerned with trying to get homeowners insurance rather than the smell.

Raising children around any type of water (pool, bay, pond, brook, etc.)requires a great deal of vigilance on the parent's part. Fencing off the access area is not the solution.

I lived along Reynolds Channel in Long Beach for 13 years & never had a problem with smells. I suppose in Masspq you could have an odor during low tides & the wind blowing off shore, but it can't be that bad.

If you have a gate & fence to protect the kids you should be fine. It is like having a pool, you have to teach them to respect the water & that it can be dangerous if not used properly. Other than that it will be the most fun they will ever have... I highly recommend it. Get those fishing poles ready!
