Yes, it must be completely empty because I let the boiler run one day, and it shut off before reaching temperature. The idea behind this is that I wanted to use up all of the oil last spring, intending to convert to gas, and dump the oil boiler and tank. The boiler is new (about two years old). Having run behind schedule on other projects in my house, I can't convert to gas this year, and now have to restore and use the oil burner for the season.

I am going to call a service person to prime and tune up the boiler. Can someone recommend a service? I called Zone (a favorite on this forum) but they don't work all the way in Queens.

I've had good luck with Bel-Mar as a COD provider, and they do service in Queens as well.

Bel-Mar Oil

Thanks. Do you use them to service/tune up your boiler as well?

First just get some oil delivered. a lot of newer burners will self prime or you may need to reset it a couple of times for it to run. After you have run out and refilled and restarted is the time to have the system cleaned and tuned - you wouldn't want to clean it before dredging up the dregs of the tank.

Or, if you have a buried tank with older lines consider getting a Tiger Loop installed which plugs the return line and eliminates priming issues. It also helps pre-heat the oil which is great during cold snaps. With my setup (Beckett burner, Weil-Mclain WGO boiler) I found it ran smoother and more consistently.

Thanks. Do oil tanks work like car gas tanks? i.e. fill up until it's full? Or must you know exactly how much oil is needed? I've read about tanks being overfilled and then leaking...

If it's a typical indoor tank it should be 275 gallons. It may have a gauge on it, and if you're not sure you can always underfill it to 250 gallons or so.

Buried tanks can be 275 or 550 gallons. Only way I could measure the level was with a yardstick and then calculate inches to gallons.

Most oil tanks have a working whistle. As the oil gets to the top of the tank the whistle starts whistling and it alerts the oil pumper that its nearing full. 99% of oil gauges are not 100% accurate. There is also sludge and sediment at the bottom of oils tanks. Mine is - 1/8 of a tank.

Good point about sludge. In outdoor tanks there is often 1 or more inches of water too.
