I'm currently pregnant and due in February. My fiancé and I live in NYC and are looking for the right place to start our family on LI. So far we've found some homes in our 400k budget in South Freeport and N Lindenhurst. We really wanted to avoid S Freeport b/c we've heard the schools were terrible. But lately I've been reading that N Lindenhurst is not safe, though it's in a decent school district. So now we're not sure where to go and want to move before baby is here, or at least not too long afterwards. Any suggestions??!? (We don't want to go further than Deer Park or into flood zones). Thanks all!

North Lindenhurst is not dangerous at all. I live in a neighboring town and know the area well.

Use this list of top schools as a guideline of towns to look through. $400k is not going to get you great schools west of Deer Park unless it's a small ranch or cape.

Look around the Massapequa, Levittown, Bethpage, Bellmore area of the list - they are considered pretty decent schools and you may find a good $400k there. If you can swing the extra distance, try Commack for better schools too.

In any case, beware of the $12k/yr taxes though, which adds $1k/mo. to your mortgage payment.
