you are better off with mini splitter units. they are super quiet and some even do both heat and cool the room.

Call an experienced handyman and when you call ask your specific questions. If you have siding that needs to be replaced ask if he has done it before, depending upon how large a unit ask about bracing, etc.

Call stores that sell air conditioners like P.C. Richards or other appliance stores and ask them to recommend someone who does this. Or call room air condlitioner repair companies and ask them to rec. someone.

I second to go with mini split. It costs a little more but what a big difference in noise. plus you need a small little hole for the pipe to go through instead of a really big hole to put an AC unit in.

$1300 compared to $500 isn't just a little more in cost.

From my understanding of mini split systems though it'll pay for itself over time due to increased efficiency. A lot will ultimately depend on how often it's used and how long each type of unit is expected to last. If it saves $100 in electric a year and lasts 10 years you'd be ahead.

It also saves having a big hole cut in the wall which may need to be patched later if the house is sold, and is a lot quieter as the compressor portion is outdoors. Electric may have to be run though which would add to the costs.

I'm also looking to have mini split with heat pumps installed. Just wanted to point out the price difference on a basic smaller 12K BTU unit. Triple the cost is a lot.

Most definitely. I had window units in my basement (8K and 12K that vented into the window wells) because my AC ducting was only on the main floor and it did the job, but had the negatives of being noisy, not especially powerful or efficient (despite higher-end units) and when one died it often required resizing the surrounding area as I didn't use a sleeve.

If I recall though the units that fit into a sleeve are more expensive than basic window units. I guess that's where $500 comes from - that wouldn't likely include installation.

The challenge with a sleeve is that you're then pretty much stuck with whatever fits the sleeve, unless there's a standard size.

The wall units and window units aren't that much different in price. Its just most important that the vent holes aren't blocked by the wall. My 12K BTU Sharp unit stopped cooling this summer after only 2 years of use. I think the unit itself cost me about $350 when it was on sale. A handyman costs about 200-250 for a days work.

$1300 cost for a 12K mitsubishi mini split was what a friend told me he paid for his.
