What is your opinion on this topic? They seem to have left out the horrible LI rental market! Which is a HUGE problem on LI as well. Should be on the top along with taxes IMHO.

Will copy text as I know many people don't subscribe to News12. I have contacted News12 & am working on a story about the rental crisis on LI as well. Please share any opinion you would like shared for this story on the LI rental crisis. We all know how bad it is for both homeowners with insanely high tax bills as well as the renters that can not find apts. Especially if they have kids or pets.

A new poll shows that property taxes are chief among the concerns of most Long Island residents. (5:57 PM)

HUNTINGTON - A new poll shows that property taxes are chief among the concerns of most Long Island residents.

The results of the latest News 12/Siena College/Newsday poll show that 36 percent of responders said taxes were their top priority. Another 17 percent said the availability of good jobs is most important.

For 14 percent of others, government corruption was a top concern; 8 percent said school quality; and another 8 percent chose health care costs. A total of 7 percent said crime; 6 percent said the environment; 2 percent said traffic; and the remaining 2 percent had no opinion.

The poll also showed that 95 percent of Long Islanders said taxes were somewhat or very important to them.

State Assemblyman Fred Thiele (I-Sag Harbor) says his experience is consistent with the findings. "Property taxes are still what I hear most about from my constituents...The primary focus is school taxes, because school taxes make up such a major portion of your tax bill," he said.

Political consultant Mike Dawidziak says the results are not a surprise. "I've been in politics 40 years on Long Island and in that 40 years, I have never seen a poll where taxes isn't the No. 1 issue," he said.

So true as we can see that. Doubt it will ever change on LI.

The taxes above everything else is what is chasing me out of state. They're killing me.
If the taxes were more reasonable it would make it easier to swing all of the other high expenses.
Whatever. No point in complaining anymore, it just does no good.

Taxes are THE issue. More so than the actual prices of homes which are also of course very high.

You know something is wrong when you see that your are looking for a home & find the right one at the right price. Only to find out you can't afford it because the taxes alone cost more than your mortgage will cost!!

When we all bought homes back in the 1970's in suffolk they were 35k or so. That was a ton of money back then.

We today that 30k mortgage is gone and taxes are 12k a year or more . So in the scheme of affordability having a paid off mortgage really accounts for little. That mortage you paid off is likely like a utility bill
