Single person in home. 3 bedroom 2 bath house, at work 4 days a week, out frequently and have a french drain system with pumps that run frequently, my bill is 80$ a month.

Gas stove and dryer (cook my own meals everyday, do laundry 1-2 times per week) 20$ a month

highest heat is set is 70* but on the normal day its at 60* while i am not home and at 67* when i am home. 150-170$ a month in oil. 2nd floor has its own T-stat set at 60* at all times unless we are in a cold snap then ill set it up to 65*

all in all my utilities account for 250-280$ of my monthly budget

My mortgage on my first house was less than a utity bill today .. think about that .. a paid off mortgage from a house you bought decades ago barely represents a piece of a utility bill as far as making things affordable . In two years time even the taxes are more than the house was .

That is why so many can’t afford to retire in Long Island despite the fact they paid off the mortgage

We ended up retiring right in queens ... the city real estate taxes are low ,, most of our income is not taxed by ny so the nyc income tax is not an issue
