I know breeders would be idea but I don't think there are any on Long Island. Any reputable pet shops? I would like a pure bread. Either a Holland or mini lop or a netherland dwarf. Thanks.

Selmer's Pet Land in Huntington Station has been around for a very long time; they might be able to help you. Give them a call:

I would check local animal rescues first. They always get unwanted bunnies in.

There are several breeders on Long Island, including one for Flemish Giants. Most are on the east end. I would also contact the Long Island chapter of the House Rabbit Society. I would NOT buy a bunny from a pet store. There aren't a lot of rabbit rescue groups on Long Island, one that I can think of. There is also a very active internet group that may be of help, but can't post the name of it here. You can PM me. You can also PM if want information about rabbit care. There is one vet on Long Island that specializes in rabbits. You can tell from my screen name I am definitely a rabbit person. We have one rabbit show at Bethpage in the spring. If you can wait, that's a good place to get a rabbit from a breeder for free or for low cost and you can examine the rabbit and talk to experts while you are there. Breeders will bring their rabbits that would make wonderful pets, but are either too old (relatively) or not qualified as a "show" rabbit. These rabbits are well-cared for and loved. The culture of "showing rabbits" is not like showing dogs, more like part of a 4-H club and also a big kids' hobby.

Sometimes, the animal rescue groups (northshore, etc.) will have a rabbit for adoption, but they are not as readily available as dogs and cats.

Sue has one now. I'd give her a call anyway as she knows all the local breeders.

Su The Rabbit Lady

Please remember that rabbits are not good pets for very young children.

He has the cage full of the cute white bunnies that he raises and the kids play with them and then one day...

And here i come in here thinking this is about food

Well, for food, I guess you can go hunt yourself one. I am sure there are plenty of rabbits in the woods of NJ and upstate.

Neighbor holds them by the head and twirls them, breaking their neck.
