On LI we have a small list of home styles typically seen.

The Hi ranch/Raised ranch
Split (and there are a few different types of splits)
Colonial
Ranch
Splanch
McMansion
Cape

Which do you have? Which is your favorite? Why?

Tudors and center hall colonials.

I have a side hall colonial that looks like a Tudor from the front.

Are McMansion's considered their own style? Or is the word used to describe a home that is way too big for its lot size?

I have a small Colonial, which is my favorite style (a large ranch would be a close 2nd).

Condo. No yardwork. No shoveling.

Just golf and beach.

Oh wait...this is the Long Island forum.

My favorite style is a toss up between front gabled, cross gabled, or Tudor influenced (half timbered) Craftsman homes. My own home is a 1920's catalog bungalow which had a Tudor influence.

My order of preference:

1. Colonials
2. Exp Ranches; Tudors
3. Splits; Hi Ranch
4. Exp Capes/Capes/Splanch

I wish there were more Victorians available, and less Capes. We are searching for homes now since we already went into contract, and pickins are really slim for Colonials in good condition in most of our preferred towns. House hunting is so stressful.

I hear ya. When we were house hunting a few months ago, colonials in our preferred towns were all like $800k+. When we found one in our price range, we quickly moved on it. Our area seems to be like 85%+ splits.

Best of luck in your search!

McMansion isn't a home style, it's a term used to connote a mass-produced home of dubious distinction usually humongous on a tiny little plot.

My favorites are
center hall colonial (what we live in)
farm ranch
a nicely laid out ranch (one floor living with the right layout can't be beat)

colonial, best use of space. We designed a modified center-hall... so you don't open the door and see stairs right there.

My absolute favorite of all time ,
One main room tin roof cabin with a loft up a ladder on one end, bathroom and laundry just behind the kitchen.
Fire place and wood stove for heat and cooking.
Of all the homes Ive ever lived, this was the best .
Roughly 600 sq feet
