Ah, Kid, the $1 movie in Northport is long gone. I remember it fondly too. That theatre was vacant for quite a while, but is now home to a a well regarded theatrical production company whose goal it is to bring high quality theatre to LI. As for inexpensive fun on LI nowadays, I'm really not aware of anything, other than going to parks and such. It does seem to me that home entertaining now occurs on a higher level than it used to. People have invested lots of money to create entertainment spaces (both indoor and outdoor) that are really nice to spend time in, and the food and drink that is served also seems to be more innovative and upgraded as well. Not too many chip n' dip parties anymore, I would say. It's nice.
One cheap thing we like to do is go to our town playground/beach. Its free to all Islip town residents.
In the summer, sneak out of work at a normal hour, order a pie on the way home, pick it up, pick up the kids, and we are sitting at our town beach at a picnic table on the water with a pie, a sneaky bottle of wine and the kids can run all over god's creation.
I know it's not Halloween , but on that day you can visit Fire Island in the evening (dress warmly) where someone will tell really scary Long Island ghost stories that all have an element of truth and history to them.
The lighthouse is a great place to visit anytime of year, actually. So serene and isolated.

That's a lot of effort, all you need are grilled brats, fresh clams, beer and good friends in any backyard for a good time. When we get extravagant we'll chip in and rent one of those inflatable water slides.
there is still lots of fun on the cheap here, but most people are too busy packing their gass guzzling SUVs with crap they don't need from Costco & then stopping at Boulder Creek for a sodium filled microwaved "steak" to notice.

Ug...we ate there the other day because my job gets me a 10% discount. It was nasty!
Anyway...back to the cheap date thing...my wife and I bought the Long Island version of the Entertainment Guide...many many 1/2 price ticket offers in there. I think you can get it now for 15 bucks.
