One thing I really like about Long Island...it seems to be relatively free of McMansions, at least in parts I've seen. (Levittown: cul-de-sac, fit in)

I originally come from the mid-west, so this is very refreshing. I guess its due to the lack of open spaces on most of LI to develop McMansion communities, but still. I love the older, well-maintained houses I see here.

guess its all perspective, no there aren't a lot of communities designed with large houses from the outset, the tradeoff is people create it.

They take a small cape, put an extension off the back and go up to max height now you have a house towering over the remaining houses.

there is a certian charm to certian houses

Hmmm... in Deer Park, they ripped down an entire wooded area to build a little cul-de-sac full of McMansions. Not to mention many other wooded areas or empty lots that developers have purchased all over Suffolk County to build these "McMansions".

I don't know what part of LI you're in, but the part of Suffolk that I'm in has one McMansion after the next.

I think a lot of us that grew up here notice them more, because there were literally none of them at all prior to about 10 years ago. I often forget that in most other parts of the country, new developments are almost exclusively a cul-de-sac with six identical McMansions and PVC fencing, blech! I even like some of the ones we have here, others are atrocious though!!

LI was the originator of the McHome. Don't forget that Levittown was the original cookie cutter neighborhood and was criticized for it. And good old Tulip Acres where Clark Street is located is 98% cape cods all with the same floor plan and exteriors with one slight exception, one house had a two car garage.

I won't bring up the architectural genius of the Splanch.

what is gross about LI is the renovation of a typical mid century home into a plastic faux-victorian-post modern mess. The architects that draw for contractors & home owners on LI need their heads examined. They draw these disgusting monsters with the same half moon window & covered front porch....bleech. And then there is the vinyl-the siding, the windows, the fences, the railings. Barf, barf, barf.
At least areas in the south build with brick or stone.

Oh, its not about the size at all...I see tons of big houses that aren't McMansions.

I would consider those actual mansions!!! There are plenty of those out east & on the north shore!
