Hello All, Wondering if anyone has insight/experience with the removal of a curbside (meaning a tree planted between the sidewalk and the curb) by the Town of Hempstead. Reading the website, it appears that the town for the fee of $350- per tree will remove it( if it is dead, dying, destroying the sidewalk/curb.roadway), as long as the property owner agrees to correct (at their cost) any defect with the sidewalk.
We have a old tree that is doing substantial damage to the roadway, curb and sidewalk. I have no issue with absorbing the cost to repair the sidewalk, but would the property owner be responsible for the curb and any raising of the roadway. Also, do they remove the stump or just the tree . Any experiences or insight would be greatly appreciated.
Tree removal by the Town of Hempstead automatically spurs a sidewalk inspection of the property. You will be summoned to repair ALL tripping hazards of the entire length of your sidewalk after the inspection.
I am also curious about this. Does the Town of Hempstead remove the trees themselves? I thought the homeowner gets the permit and then pays someone to remove it? If its the homeowners cost, what does it normally cost?
Also has anybody recently repaired a sidewalk within the Town of Hempstead? curious on the average cost per flag and if its cheaper to find a company on your own to do it vs having the Town of Hempstead contract someone to do it.
As the original poster years back, i can tell you that it was pretty seamless. At the time, the Town of Hempstead had a contractor that was responsible for both the tree and sidewalk work. Given that it was a county job, both contractors were among the larger more prominent "construction" and tree cutting companies on the Island, which would have charged prices that were astronomical to do what is a relatively small job. I don't recall what the price per flag was but it was comparable to some of the lower prices general contractors. The tree on the other hand was 1/4 of what it costs us to do trees on our own property, something like $500 per tree and stump removal for what were hundred year old massive trees. We had quotes at 2K to 3K per tree before going to the Town, but we did have to wait until they were able to schedule it.
The best part of it is that the costs can be paid over time ( with minor interest) and rolled into your taxes. Nothing says you cant pay of the "assessment" early which is what we did, making it overall less expensive and easier to deal with.
Nice to see someone post a "Happy Ending" involving the Town Of Hempstead. They used to be the worst to deal with and corruption was their middle name.
Thats great news, do you happen to remember roughly the time frame? Meaning like 1. after submitting the permit for the tree and sidewalk how long did it take for the Town of Hempstead to reply back and 2. After they replied back how long till the company came to take care of the tree and sidewalk?
