My story is that I no longer take the LIRR to work as I work on LI, but I still subscribe all the communications tools they use, so all I can say is I feel your pain.
We woke up to check the website and everything said suspended. When you clicked on it, the message said first trains were at 7 with the exception of a few lines. If you do the schedule, it said the first train out to Penn from here was 638am. It was all very confusing.
I drove in due to total confusion. I know my line was down, but they never said whether Babylon trains were making stops at Valley Stream, or what level of service to expect at Lynbrook (only 1.6 miles away but no real parking and today did not seem like a great day to walk up Peninsula Blvd).
As I drove down Sunrise, I noticed people waiting at Valley Stream. That's a REALLY busy station to be left completely in the dark, especially with the Far Rock, Long Beach and West Hempstead lines all down.
If it's the same story tomorrow, I'll catch an Uber to Lybrook, where the LIRR is now (well after rush hour) saying that all Babylon trains will be stopping.
I arrived at the Bethpage station shortly before 7. When I first arrived the signs said the 7:01 train was running on time. Eventually they did not list the status of trains anymore. Not a good sign. I got on a very PACKED train just before 8.
When the train doors opened at a very crowded Hicksville, most people looked at realized there was absolutely no room. One person got off the train, so I jokingly announced "We've got room for one!" One person got on, but of course there was that one guy that tried to shove his way on, saying "I have to be at work on time!" The rest of us on the train just looked at each other like, "Yeah ok. We all decided to take this one train for the hell of it."
I knew last night when they said that the LIRR would be operational this morning that is was all a lie. Barely functional would have been a more accurate description. The LIRR is run solely for the benefit of the unions. Did you really think the lazy union worker was going to remove the snow?
Yea, definitely the unions fault. They ordered this HISTORICAL snowstorm. While I am the 1st to bash on the LIRR, I am not sure what anyone expected? Trains don't run through 10 inches or more snow. We got 26 to 30!!!

Yea, I'm annoyed at the lack of communication, but I have no doubt the employees are working hard to clear the tracks. The amount of snow, which was well beyond what was forecasted, is ridiculous.
