Funny and interesting thread, especially coming from someone born and raised in Manhattan, lived in Queens for 10 years, and on LI for 20 years. When I lived in Manhattan, it was New York, NY. In Queens, I wrote Middle Village, NY. If they didn't know that was Queens, too bad. The POST OFFICE DID. On LI, it was Smithtown, or Selden, NEW YORK. I never wrote Queens, or Long Island.
Accents? I don't know. Yes, I have a NY Metro accent, but there is a difference between the boroughs. My husband is from Queens and although we have similar speech, it is not the same. Actually, most people here in Florida are surprised that I am from NY, other than I speak very FAST they say. I worked in the corporate world as a receptionist in Manhattan, and maybe I negated my "accent" somewhat for the business world. LI speech is also similar, but different. It just depends, as many have said, how long and where on LI they are from. I have found that the farther on the East End you go, the speech changes.
At any rate, Long Island IS part of New York State.
If you really want to know how stereotyped we actually are, just watch the Joey Buttafuoco/Amy Fisher made-for-tv movies, especially the Alyssa Milano one.
Good Christ.
I hope I don't sound like them.
That's because Manhattan is within the "New York, NY" post office.

That's because Middle Village is a postal station (branch) in the "Flushing, NY" post office, and postal authorities allow the use of the postal station name.

That's because Smithtown and Selden are post office (neither of which is coterminous with the Hamlet of Smithtown in the Town of Smithtown in Suffolk County or the Hamlet of Selden in the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, respectively).

Queens is a county. Manhatten is a city "NYC",
Long Island is a region, etc...
Many people from Queens believe they are their own entity, and refuse to be affilitated with "Long Island" even though they are actually on, and part of LI.
Many people from LI believe anything west of the Nassau county border is "The city".
We really do have a twisted sense of geography.

The fake Long Island accent is much worse than the real one.

Karl, you apparently have a twisted sense of geography. On one hand, you do realize that Queens is located on Long Island, so you have apparently seen a map before......but on the other....you really didn't know that Queens is a part of New York City???? You gotta be kidding me LOL....anything west of Nassau IS NYC!!

I have actually encountered many people who believe that NYC is only Manhattan and the Bronx (as was the case prior to 1898). They think Brooklyn and Queens are like Nassau and Suffolk. Id hate to see what they think of Staten Island, they probably think it's part of Jersey.
