Are you talking about a community garden like vegetables or an actual garden in a community?

Sorry, should have been more specific - vegetable gardening. Everyone gets a small plot on which to grow something.

This would apply to an area where most people live in apartments. Most people have their own plots of land for their own use. No need to share or grow stuff on a rooftop like they do in cities.

The Cornell Cooperative Extension in Merrick/East Meadow has a community garden. Granted, not sure if you're able to purchase / individually farm but they definitely do have an active farm, and, I'm sure they'd be able to point you in the direction for further options around the Island.

The Town of Huntington has two that I'm aware of. One at the intersection of Dunlop and Greenlawn Rds - with a long wait list - and the other on New York Avenue in Huntington Station (Gateway Park Community Garden), by Lowndes Avenue.

Here's an "official" list:

Cornell Cooperative Extension | Community Gardens in Suffolk County

Happy gardening and harvesting!
