Hi folks,

Anyone here have experience with building a studio shed / garden office in their backyard? Example below:
https://www.studio-shed.com/

As a work from home dad with 2 young kids, having some separation from the noise is quite appealing. If done tastefully (again, referring to the example above), I can see it being a safe return on investment when selling the house in the future. I intend on obtaining the necessary permits/CO from TONH. Some general questions:

1. Has anyone built something similar for their own backyard? Who was the vendor and how would you rate the quality and service?

2. Any gotcha's/lessons learned?

3. Are you happy about the decision?

Thank you!

This is really nice!!! I never knew that had something like this. I have a regular storage shed but if I knew these existed I could have gotten one so when my husband annoys me I can go there for some peace and quite. LOL Just kidding.

Lol. I guess it depends on how much you value your quiet time since these office sheds dont come cheap. Looks like a minimum of 20k for material+ installation + increased taxes. For me, it's worth it...

Why not get a regular shed, insulate, sheet rock and paint it. It might be cheaper than $20K.

A shed that is intended for habitation of any kind will be a variance. You will need to make sure that the rest of your house and property is 100% up to code and you will need an architect to draw up plans for your shed and a surveyor to draw up radius maps to notify the neighbors of your variance hearing. At the hearing, if anyone objects, it will be difficult to get approved if you dont know somebody or have never cut a check to the political party in control. Good luck.

You would be nuts to seek a permit for an auxiliary habitable structure, and in many towns it would be flatly prohibited. This is a shed, whether your tool of choice is a lawnmower, a radial arm saw, or a laptop. I have a shed that, while it is used for tool storage, has electricity and was built to match our house in matching cedar shake, stone foundation, awning windows, bluestone step, etc. It would be fairly simple to insulate and sheetrock the interior to "store" paper, a desk and a computer instead of hedge clippers and lawn equipment.

Now I can see why these aren't very common. Thanks for the reality check.

Intriguing. Would I run the risk of CO issues during a sale when I have a shed with electricity, windows and insulation? Do you have a picture that you can PM me by any chance?
Thank you.

You bought your house to live in and enjoy! Don't worry about your resale unless your selling in the next few years. If it was an issue during resale just take it down and be done with it. Why stress it now when you can enjoy it then destroy it in 15+ years.
