Hi,

not sure if anyone can give me some advice

We just bought a house end of 2015, we haven't moved in yet and plan to move during summer, we want our children to finish the school year in their current school and start new school in sept 2016

my question is when should I start the school registration process ? I called the school and was told there's nothing can be done until we physically move to LI, I just worried I won't be able to get any paper work done as school will be closed during summer vacation

any parents in this forum have experience with process of transferring school ?
thanks for any help !!!

I would talk to school again...they don't really "close" in the summer. There should be staff there to help with registration. I would also make sure all forms are filled out (dental/health forms w/ immunization record), copies of mortgage/tax bill, utility bill. Also no need to give details about your move-in situation. Just bring the paperwork to school and do it. You will get a folder with PTA info, events, school supply list etc. All things you should have sooner than later to prepare kids for school. Good luck!

If you have already closed on the house, whether you physically live there should not be relevant. Just tell them you live there and go ahead with the paperwork. You should have utility bills and a deed to prove your ownership.

School's district offices are open all summer though some go to a four day work week. You can do it early-mid August which will give you plenty of time for proper paperwork to be completed and the district to assign your child a teacher. Don't wait until the last minute because that is the busiest time for them.

My daughter kindergarden class started out with 17 kids. And now, it's 22 kids. Obv there are 4 kids just joined after Sept....so, it's pretty common. Don't worry.

If you have already purchased the house then you can register now. I think there was a miscommunication when you called the school - you probably said you were moving this summer instead of saying you are already a homeowner who wants to register for next year.

School offices are open all summer.
