3 hours drive, hopefully closer to 2. Would like to see suggestions on places to go for a family long weekend. Probably airbnb a place so it doesn't need to be touristy but should have things to do. Done Poconos in the past, but are there different areas there that would make it unique? Same with upstate NY Monticello area.

Yup!
North Fork is less traffic-choked, good for hiking, calm swimming, wine and scenery.
Montauk for the best beaches on Long Island and none (well, far less) of the BS associated with the Hamptons. I prefer to go to Montauk in September, though, when it's still warm (and the water is warmest) and the crowds have thinned, but everything is still open.
I'd go to the North Fork any time of year!

what types of activities are you looking for? Are you ruling out beach locations during the summer months or is that something you'd consider?

Also Hudson Valley: Storm King Art Center; Going up a little bit, New Paltz and Mohonk Mountain, Lake Minnewaska. There is the Rockefeller estate up there, too. I haven't been but I've heard great things.

Saugerties at exit 20 on the Thruway isn't a bad trip and a very quaint village with antique shops await you. Visit Opus 40 while you are there a quarry that a man built that is unbelievable.
