High taxes are a fact in Long Island. In general I believe we pay more and get more BUT. How are we not talking about these crooks getting convicted with a $95k pension for life!?

$96G pension approved for disgraced ex-NY Sen. Dean Skelos - NY Daily News

Simple answer.

The people who write the rules are the ones who benefit from those rules. There has often been talk of changing the rules to penalize those convicted of illegal/unethical behavior. Those talks go nowhere.

Too many of the legislators are corrupt and worried such changes will directly affect themselves.

Just like term limits. They will never approve of a rule that could threaten their own job security.

Absurd from a voter side of the equation. Makes perfect sense from a self-serving corrupt politician side of the equation.

The NYPD cops who are in the midst of the bribery scandal recently all have quit their posts and filed for early retirement to collect on their pensions even if they're sent to jail. Sheldon Silver is another one.

This. ^^

NY's government (downstate especially) has been set up to grow and support a bloated public sector. This is a fine place if you're a cop-teacher-politician. As for the rest of us funding them...
