Searching for good areas in LI. We are moving from Jersey and LI was our choice. Need a good area for kids, we have 3 small kids. Something not too far from supermarkets or shopping areas. My husband is a commercial plumber so I don't think finding a job in that area should be too bad plus he's used to commuting now. We would like to rent first if possible just to be sure on the area before we purchase a house. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Extremely vague. Give us something else to narrow this down. What kind of town are you looking for? Long Island varies from urbanized areas of Western Nassau to rural country in Eastern Suffolk, and everything in between.

Sorry about that. Suburb areas nothing too urban if you know what I mean. I want an area where I can walk around with the kids. Country area is nice as well but I don't want anything too expensive. Not broke by any means but want to live comfortably. My husband is from Brooklyn and doesn't want to go back there bc he doesn't think the schools are good. Friendly area but a fun area. Doesn't matter if it's by the water or not. Not really sure what else but hope this kinda gives a better idea thanks

I think it's funny when people say they don't want anything too expensive... LOL. Hopefully you did your research & you know living doesnt come cheap here.

That said, yeah narrow it down. Are you looking to be closer to NYC/Brooklyn? Because some places, specifically on the east end can be like 2-3 hours to get to NYC. If you're looking to be closer to NYC to do things there on the weekends & what not then I don't recommend going too far out.

We're a long island. Is there any specific area you're looking more toward - Nassau? Suffolk? What's your budget?

When I say expensive I mean I'm not vacationing with P. Diddy in the hamptons. We are middle class family. I'm a stay at home mom. Our budget is $250-$300k. If I had to choose, I would say no more than 2 hours from NYC. My husband mentioned Merrick but doesnt know too much about it. Visited there when he was young. Preferably something in the middle not too far out. I hear Smithville is pretty expensive but what about the surrounding areas

Yeah, one mans expensive is another man's cheap. Without a budget or location preference it's really hard to throw out random towns.

For Nassau, most of it is very pricey. Maybe Hicksville? Lots to do there. Tons of shopping and restaurants.

Suffolk: You can find something cheaper but again, suffolk is a huge county.

South shore central suffolk: Sayville, Oakdale, Bohemia are all really nice. Sayville has a great downtown.
South shore western suffolk: Bay Shore is okay, but lots to do.
North shore central/western suffolk: Smithtown, Kings park, Huntington & Northport (last 2 very pricey, but both have nice downtowns)

$250-300k is not going to get you far in LI. You would have to settle for the bad areas in LI and even that is stretching it ...like Brentwood and New Cassel.

Patchougue could work. And it's fun.

What about places like Ronkonkoma, Islandia, Holtsville, Medord, Coram, Selden, Farmingville, PJ Station, Rocky Point etc?

$250k-$300k wont get you into Merrick.

That budget definitely limits you unfortunately.
