I haven't been to all the "bad" areas in Long Island. Just Terrace Avenue in Hempstead, and Nassau Road in Roosevelt.
Terrace Avenue is the only place in Long Island I've seen that can resemble a bad area in the 5 boroughs. Nassau Road, you can tell that you're in "the hood," but I didn't feel unsafe. To me, it looked like any major street in Southeast Queens. Aside from the Terrace Avenue area, I wouldn't be too concerned about going to low-income areas in Long Island.
As for the car, I wouldn't worry about that either - I live across the street from a housing project in NYC, and as I type this I can see a BMW and an Infiniti (both newer models) parked on the street.
Social workers go in NYCHA all the time to do casework - I don't ever see anybody messing with them.
I feel the same way regarding Nassau County hoods. Roosevelt in general doesn't even feel that hood to me. And the fact OP mentioned Baldwin and Lindenhurst is laughable.
Even though there aren't many Asians in Roosevelt, I highly doubt her being Asian would be an issue.
Same thing with Hempstead and Uniondale.
Baldwin actually does have plenty of Asians, and the Asian population seems to be growing.
IMO the roughest parts of Long Island are North Bellport (area in between sunrise and montauk highways), Wyandanch, and Hempstead.
Roosevelt isn't that bad, sure it has it's problems but I would feel safer there than in the 3 places I listed above. Lindenhurst and Baldwin though? Those are typical middle class neighborhoods, and Baldwin can get pretty expensive even.
Never had any problems in Wyandanch or North Bellport.
I've had more incidents in Baldwin than Hempstead. In fact I've never had a problem in Hempstead, it's just sketchy.
That neighborhood in North Bellport is definitely poor and run-down (for the most part) but i've never really felt unsafe there either.
In those type of areas, you'll only find trouble if you go around looking for it (in the vast majority of cases). If you mind your own business, stay away from the trouble crowds, trust your gut instinct and don't go there at night then you're almost guaranteed to be fine. If you must visit at night then make sure that it is inside the home of a trusted person/patient.
Speaking of Freeport, I actually think the downtown is decent. Most of the stores have nice wooden signs, little things like that greatly improve an area's appearance.
I hate the ugly signs many business owners in poor areas put up, do they not have any common sense?
Lindenhurst is your typical middle class neighborhood. Why even mention it as a bad area when it is not?
