Our rich retirees in Dixie thank you for your support, and there's also billions in municipal debt taxpayers will be responsible to pay.

Dude, this dysfunction has been in place since at least the 1970s, and you're first noticing? Or maybe just trolling us. Either way, corruption and overspending is hard wired into the system and reflected in your property taxes. There's not much left to do about it except to leave NY.

What's the problem?
Everyone keeps voting in these crooks in.
Everyone APPROVES the school budget. Because God forbid little Johnny doesn't have after school activities.

So, as long as The People keep these Crooks in office, nothing will ever get done. Haven't we've been hearing this decade after decade?

Folks, face it. We live in one of the most expensive parts of the USA. We pick & choice our towns/homes based on "What school district "? Correct? However, that's just 1/3 of the problem.

How about we fix the overcrowding and congestion problems while we're at it too. The infrastructure on lon island can't support the population. There is traffic everywhere. Other places like upstate only have traffic when there is an accident but on LI there is always traffic no matter the situation.

it's time for Long Island to grow up and realize it's not the 1950s/1960s American suburb any more. Start making downtowns livable, especially around train hubs.

This is why I HATE politics!!! I'm not willing to leave the area I grew up in and happen to have a great job in as well. At least not without those idiots listening to what I have to say. These jerks in office have to be held accountable. They are killing the middle class. All of us who work our butts off trying to make the best of our lives, we're just screwed!... I've known this has been going on for a long time now. Wife & I are just getting serious about buying a townhouse now and the more research I do the more frustrated I get.

Someone with a little more education and a better understanding of how the system works has got to step up and make stuff happen. There's no way that little ole' me could even get the powers that be to make the necessary changes.

But I thought everyone was leaving LI? I NEVER saw so much traffic! I never saw so many apartment/condo complexes going up. Don't tell me it's illegals, because I doubt they can afford those outrageous rents.

The traffic is one of the top reasons I left. I have some friends that moved all the way out to Suffolk to avoid the Nassau taxes and congestion but they tell me they Suffolk is getting worse and worse each day.

The problem is that LI was built for and planned for 1950s families and infrastructure. There are only so many highways and main arteries which contribute to the ridiculous congestion. The poster above me suggested that towns develop their 'downtown/main St area'. This is a fantastic idea! however with the NIMBYism that exists on this problematic island, I doubt it will every happen.

Long island had its day in the sun and doesn't keep up worth the times. The only thing it had going for it are the schools which are great compared to nyc however there are so much better options elsewhere. I truly hope LI can fix is multitude of issues but it is doubtful as is residents wear rose colored glasses and are blind to the obvious. Only when they leave and see what they are missing will the light be shown to them.

By increasing population density without providing substantial jobs, what will this achieve? There is competition for decent jobs in NYC. LI is bleeding out good jobs which are being replaced with temporary construction jobs (such as TOD projects) and low paying chain retail. We have to stop the loss of jobs, first.
