I seem to recall many people saying the same thing about Sandy, better to be prepared rather than take the risk.
Still quite a bit of erosion, I wonder how the shoreline of Fire Island fared. Street flooding in Lindenhurst and other places, not going to be pretty when the next hurricane hits. Also only September 6, almost 2 months to go.
So nothing happened, but the same people here complaining that News 12, etc jumped the gun, would be the same people complaining if they didn't warn enough. This might be news to you, but weather is unpredictable. You can predict a general idea, but things can easily change. The only proper course of action for the media, the govt, etc, is to err on the side of caution. Do they do it sensationally? Of course. But lets not forget the media and the govt is a business with liability concerns. Can you imagine if News 12 played it down and this storm came in like a sumbitch and killed a dozen people? They will always, always, always err on the side of caution. Get over it and grow up.

Erring on the side of caution is one thing but the sensationalism is out if control. The result is once the next sandy does come, possibly years down the line, nobody is paying attention after Newsrag/News12 says the sky is falling for the 100th time.
The problem sensationally overplaying warnings and perpetual caution erring is it creates "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" syndrome. Depending on where you live, it takes varying degrees of time, angst and energy to prepare for a mid to worst case scenario. This can get old, and many of the people who have to prepare are old/older with less energy.
But of course the twist in the classic tale when you apply it here is that when the townspeople finally ignore the boy, the wolf does not eat the boy, it feeds on the townspeople.
