Anyone done this recently? Have some crumbling brick (non structrual) inside my masonry wood burning fireplace, would require me to either fix the whole thing or set up a liner in order to utilize it. It got me thinking, since I already have gas stove / heating - that I should just switch to a gas insert with the intention of utilizing it for heat and ambiance.

My question is, anyone have any recommendations for a showroom to check out my options? Or someone to do the install? What can I expect this to run?

If i read correctly you basically size it up, get something that fits as best as possible, then someone has to basically trim it out to make it look seemless? Which would mean you'd likely need more then just the plumber.

Got 3 in my house.

You can go to home outlets to look at sets. There are many options but I would not recommend anything but the very well rated brands - like Real Frye - the starter sets at Lowes and Home Depot can produce noxious odors when burning. You can buy online or via a local fireplace store. Most now have remotes with thermostats.

Sizing: Really not an issue you can just measure your width, height and depth - really a standard size will meet most fireplaces.

Install: pretty much any plumber can put them in. They have the necessary masonry bits and will run the copper pipe to you gas source - I use propane tanks. If you have your set handy they will then install it and hook it up for you.

Thank you for the informative reply. When you say home outlet stores, you mean like Century in Lindemhurst or Probuild in Farmingdale?

I have natural gas in the house, so I imagine they would just tap that somewhere.

You don't have to trim out around the insert itself? Even a "perfect fit" drop in should still have gaps all around no?
