66 all year.
Thermostat is off limits.
Anybody touches it they know there will be severe consequences.
If you feel a little cold bundle up, use extra blankets or the electric blanket.
66 set it and forget it.

If I am away from anything longer than 1 day I set my thermostat to 58.

I left it off completely when we were away a few days recently since temps haven't been freezing and when we got back at night it was at 58F. We usually keep it at 61F when away a few hours, 67F normal, but it hardly ever drops that low by the time we're back. As long as your pipes are kept from freezing by keeping it above 58F (IMO), don't sweat it.

I've read in articles that it's better for the wallet (probably not by much) to just drop it below what you need than to keep it at a "maintenance" level when away.

I once turned my thermostat off for a few days when I went on a family trip in the middle of the winter. When I got back my house was around 47 degrees. My wife not pleased to say the least lol. I'll be keeping it around 63-65 the next time we go away.

He recommended not less than 5 degrees to keep the home when away. For example, i like to keep the house at 69-70 when i am home, therefore he is saying 64-65 to keep the house when i am away. It's only my husband and I right now and i leave around 8am and get home around 7pm.

Typically i keep the house at 60 when i am away and set my nest to heat the house about 1.5 hour before i get home. The technician was saying, since 60 is so far away from 70, i'm using more oil to heat the house.

What are your thoughts/experiences on which degree to keep the house?
Your oil guy is saying with a straight face you will use more oil keeping the house at 60 rather than 65 when you are away? He's trying to sell more oil with advice like that.

Depending how quickly your home cools off/retains heat the oil usage to raise it 10 degrees may be more than trying to maintain 65 vice 60 degrees.

Nonsense. No way you use LESS OIL by keeping your home warmer 8 hours a day when away. If you have a way to prove that then you have changed the laws of physics. That's like saying you should run your air conditioner 8 hours a day instead of turning it off when you are away to save money on electricity.

I am saying exactly that, using your a/c example which I am more familiar with based on how your home maintains/loses the a/c runs less to maintain the temp during the day. The NY habit of shutting off the a/c in the morning (because it's really not hot) then turn it on at 5-6 at night when you get home causes a properly sized system to run excessively to cool/dehumidify the house (during the hottest part of the day)where an average home will maintain requiring far less run time then you think.

Heating is the same if you have a properly sized system the fuel consumption to raise it 10 degrees can be much higher than the fuel needed maintain it 5 degrees warmer so the afternoon warm up is less intense. As I said before the homeowner needs to determine how their system runs and how long that 10 degree swing takes to accomplish.

Thanks for all the input! I'm currently testing it out, keeping it at 63 when away and 68/69 when we're home.
