Union lobbyists spent very heavily in Albany for years. No-one paid attention. NY has a huge tax burden in a way many western states do not because of the entrenched union interests and their political power on legislators.

People have tried to fix it, even Cuomo at his most powerful only got so far, making paltry changes going forward. Plus the present contracts negotiated in the past, while the public were asleep (only got themselves to blame..) are done. Can't welsh on those.

States and municipalities should be in the business, and only in the business, of providing services for their citizens, end of story.

Yes, I agree, but what can be done about it? NY will never be a state with reasonable taxes, unless there's a municipal bankruptcy or failure.

The only answer I know is to leave and let others carry the burden, if and until the system implodes

We need to automate the process.

Why aren't sick days built into their salary already? I pay you $50k a year and it comes with 5 sick days to use. If you don't use them, that's fine by us. Why do they get paid for them in addition? Same for paying out vacation days. Why does it have to be in addition to what they pay you and not just 1 big compensation package?

What is the point in having the power to vote when even people voted in are not looking out for our best interests? The whole system is to blame because obviously it can be gamed - this does not lie on the people who do or do not cast votes. Those who do vote are often only picking from the best of the worst. Those who do not vote clearly feel it's a waste of time.

Look at what happened to Steve Levy when he got into a fight with SCPD..his intention was to force them to the table by using the Sheriffs.

The DA, who was tight with the police commissioner, went after his wife. Steve Bellone then signed off on a huge windfall to current cops, while stiffing those who haven't been hired yet.

For the most part, you should be voting against anyone who is supported by the police unions until the compensation situation gets under control.

When Social Security was first created the retirement age was set at 65. The average life expectancy of a man was 62 at that time.

Hence the majority of folks would never collect as they would be dead so premiums were low and no problem funding it.

As longevity increases SS is going broke. Cant have someone retiring at 65 when average life expectancy is 74.

But cops, fireman did not get the message. My two Uncle way back in the did the full 40 years as Cops in NYC so they retired on 100 percent pension at 62. Both were dead in a few years. Today the same men could each live to 90.

My town I see the retired cops and firemen in their lat 40s early 50s picking their kids up at school, going to gym, working as guards, construction, jogging, boating etc. Folks live longer. These guys could easily work safely to at lease 60 as a cop.

The min pension should be at 30 years. Still a great deal. Regular people work 21-67 full time. or 46 years.

Or you want to keep it at 20 fine. dont hire new cops UNDER the age of 35.

The ultimate insanity a friend I know became a NYC garbage man on his 18 birthday and retired with his 20 years on his 38 birthday when he retired to Florida. To add to madness he got married at 36 to a 26 year old wife. So the pension of a couple who is 38 and 28 will last till the last one of the two dies of old age.

People keep voting to send the same folks to Albany/Local boards year after year, so I'm not sure how much sympathy is warranted here. People buy into the fear tactics way too easily. Touch the cops? Attila the Hun and his army will pour over the border from Queens. Touch the teachers? forget about little Johnny/Jenny ever making something of themselves. Touch the LIRR? Hope you got your Nikes to walk to the city.

I don't disagree.
20 years and a pension and full medical.

So say the negotiators held the line with new contract?
Would these NCPDs actually walk-- I don't think so.

PONYs would snap up these positions in a heartbeat.
