calculated with Overtime included.

Federal employees retirement does not include O/T. Would seem to be the way to go.

Not to mention that it should be a defined contribution system not defined benefit.

Why not change the rules with the new contract negotiation.
Or do we also need a SWAMP drain?

also paid out sick days.

So rookie cop who started in 1996 at 52 K a year does not take ten sick days which has a value of $2,000 in 1996 retires today in 2016 earning $156,000 he is paid out those ten days at 2016 salary not 1996 salary which is today $6,000.

They should not pay out sick days not used at all. But at least at value in year when they did not take them.

that's why I don't mind when some of them croak. Their arrogance has enabled them to live a squandering life style so that they die earlier and it's less burden on tax payers..

It should be whatever is fair and not a burden on the taxpayer.
They should also be required to lose the cop attitude and superiority complex.
Without the badge you are nothing but a fat jerk with a mustache.
I'm pro civil servant but the money stuff is really getting ridiculous around here.
Needs an overhaul that will never happen.

what's most amusing is how many people just don't get it. At *any* point, has ANY elected official ever tried to, you know, negotiate or re-negotiate these items? placing blame, if there even is any, is at the feet of the elected officials. And,
FloridaBeachBum...your numbers are off.

Depends: not for cops, but nysers had added tiers that have much more reasonable benefits.

A lot of hate already on this thread. First of all, the cops and firefighters in NYS just took a new pension tier that caps the overtime calculation a few years ago. Let's not blast the people who get up and go to work every day too hard. Getting paid for unused sick time is common, but could be negotiated away.
The overtime that gets paid out is often used to supplement man power, which actually saves money if you look into it. The county is not paying another salary plus pension and health benefits. People go crazy when they see these overtime numbers, but they forget that these guys are basically doing the job of two people and putting in crazy hours.
There are plenty other areas of government waste to attack besides hardworking employees.

Bloated overtime, pay and pensions ARE government waste. None of us who get up and and go to work every day receive ANYTHING like this kind of compensation. The line between cops and robbers is very hard to see on LI. Got a badge? Ka-ching! Ka-ching!

Yes, we're being squeezed, bled and held upside down and shaken until the last dime falls out of our pockets. I wonder what the gravy train will look like when the NYC economy has a downturn. Wall Street is already moving backroom jobs out of NY and automation is replacing others. Thousands are leaving. Who will refill the gravy train?
