I don't think "being friendly" with them will have anything to do with skirting a NYS inspection unless they don't mind losing their operating license. I have 35 on all windows (except windshield) and subtle tint on lamps. Never been stopped before, and now I have to possibly replace it all because of the 5% extra.

It's not clear - are the shops going to fail you for having front-side windows tinted at all? All it mentions is the light test. I also wonder if cops will start becoming more vigilant. Even if you don't do it for looks, the tint helps from the glaring sun & heat - our other vehicle has no tint and it makes an obvious difference.
although you have 35% tint in your windows, you will still fail the inspection. Your windows will fail at 29%

This just in: The Cuomo family has invested in a window un-tinting franchise, with stores all across NYS.

EDIT>> for those who say front sides and windshields are not allowed to be tinted at all, check the VTL: https://dmv.ny.gov/registration/tinted-windows

It states that it cannot block more than 30%, so apparently that belief is/was false and that you can have them tinted.

Also I stated earlier that 35 was only 5% away from legal, which is not the case. I would have to switch from Carbon 35 to Carbon 70, which is a huge difference.

. Every piece of glass from the factory has a 6% tint in the glass. If you put a layer of 35% tint on your window, you will fail because it will come up as 29%. I went through this when I was a teen ager and I used to tint windows.

^ this is what I had used so it's why I referenced the 70 (light transmission). http://www.suntekfilms.com/files/ind_auto_Carbon.pdf

They want 70% VLT, so I'd fail even if it were 30% VLT.

If glass already has tint, we can't even get the 70 because that will take us to 64%? That's kinda ridiculous. Or should specs consider the 6% already on glass?

I doubt lawmakers were aware of the window ingredients
